#Trend Diary

Trends are made. They are created. They are meant to be followed. And they are meant to be broken.

All-Americana

So we’re finally in the homestretch of Spring semester and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m already in summer mode. To be honest, I’ve been in summer mode since mid February, but that’s beside the point. It won’t be long now until we’re basking in the rays of June, sparking up summer romances, and doing a bunch of random shit with our friends at 3 a.m. on a Monday just because we can.

The recent April showers may have made it impossible to naturally sunbathe, but there’s no reason why you can’t get a head start on the ridiculous BFF adventures and exciting new romances. I know I have. Until then, however, here’s a little something to fuel your May daydreams and get you through the semantics of finals. Yes, that’s right—it’s time for this summer’s trends. We call this look All-Americana.

FASHION

1. American flag print: Show off your patriotism. And if you’re not patriotic, then show off your love of in-the-moment fashion and get some flag stuff ASAP. If you’re having a hard time finding suitable pieces with the print, red, white and blue as a general color scheme is also a perfect outline for a summer outfit.

2. High-wasted shorts: If you’ve never tried on a pair of high-waisted anything, you probably have no idea how ridiculously flattering this look is. It works with so many different body types and really elongates your legs. Win-win.

3. Bleached denim: Easy to find, even easier to make. Bleached out denim shirts, shorts and pants are absolute commodities this upcoming season. If the pieces in-store don’t seem genuine enough to you, pick up some bleach of your own and have at it. If you’ve never played with bleach before, I highly recommend watching a few YouTube tutorials first. We wouldn’t want you completely destroying your favorite, best-fitting pair of skinnies.

4. Band shirts/Other sweet graphic tees: I could live in old band T-shirts. I really could. And so should you this summer. Vintage or brand new, black & white or neon bright—if you like the artist on the tee, you really can’t go wrong. Not only is this a trend, but it’s a good way to kick back some profit to your favorite artists. After all, the digital age has been wonderful to us, but not so nice the music industry. Comic book tees and anything Harley Davidson are a couple other American faves.

Love & Chanel,

Ema

BEAUTY BY CICI

Enough with the lovey dovey shit…through thick and thin you can always count on your best friend! Summer may be a time for romance, but it’s also a time for girls’ nights out. Or days out, I should say. For this shoot I just decided to play around with bright colors, from the eyes and lips to strands of hair. That’s right—I literally colored on strands of hair. The best part is it’s okay to go outside the lines!

MAKEUP

 1. Starting with your eyes, prep & prime them with Urban Decay’s Eye Potion. Then try Coastal Scents 88 color palette for the bright shadows shown here. Hot pink, plum purple, metallic red and maroon were my shadow picks for this look. The most important thing to keep in mind when using bold colors like these is to blend! You want a smokey eye effect, not a bruised, swollen one.

2. Try Almay’s black liquid liner for the dramatic cat-eye look.

3. Sweep on your blackest mascara twice. And then do it again.

4. As always, prep your face. I used Laura Mercier’s oil free primer (a personal favorite). For a smooth canvas, use an opaque liquid foundation like MAC’s Match Master and set your foundation with a translucent powder.

5. MAC Dainty blush and Ruby Woo & Rebel lipsticks. ‘Nuff said.

HAIR

This was my ultimate fave because even the process is fun to do! This process is called hair chalking. What you need to do first is go to an art supply store and pick up a soft pastel chalk set with multiple colors to choose from. Don’t get this confused with oil pastels. That’s just a disaster waiting to happen. Once you’ve got your supply, dab each section of hair with water, then twist the section and secure the bottom of the twist with your fingers. Next, color the hair with the chalk in downward strokes. For blonde hair, don’t get the sections too wet or else the color can stain. For darker hair, the more water you use, the more vibrant the colors will be. Mix it up and have fun with this one!

Springtime Rebel

There is no better cure for a March Monday morning hangover than doing last night all over again. Spring is a chance to step out of the mundane and reinvent yourself, so put down the books and pick up a mimosa. We call this months’ look Springtime Rebel. After all, who said you had to wait until Spring Break to skip class?

Fashion is all about revamping the classics to fit our current needs, and what we currently need is a fucking break from school. That’s why this month we had the ultimate anti-school movies in mind for our editorial inspiration—The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

FASHION

1. Blazers: It doesn’t get more classic than this. Switch up the leather jacket with a blazer next time you go out. You’ll still look just as fab at the bars, but you’ll stay cool when your favorite dance song comes on.

2. Floral print: Okay, so I have to admit that I do wear floral print all year-round, but if you’re like most people who think it’s strange to rock a rose-adorned crop top in 60 degree weather, your time is coming! Flowers just have a way of making everything prettier—cardigans, shirts, blazers, dresses and even shorts. It is usually a bold print on its own, so try to keep the rest of your outfit on the solid side.

3. Color: Yeah I said it, color is a trend. Don’t get me wrong, 90% of my closet consists of black clothes, but the other 10% is brighter and bolder than a bag of skittles. A sheer color-block blouse or a pair of pastel jeans or shorts can give the perfect pop of color to your outfit. Neon dresses are also a spring favorite.

4. Denim: Go beyond jeans. Denim shirts and colorful denim shorts are spring must-haves. They can pretty much go with anything, except more denim. I know it’s kind of confusing, but remember we’re not actually trying to look like we starred in an 80s rom com. Use your denim sparingly.

GUYS’ FASHION

First thing’s first: roll your pants up. Just a little. I know it’s an odd request for some of you, but there’s something about bare ankles that will drive the girls mad, trust me. You can (and should) do this with fitted denim, corduroy and even khaki pants if you’re going for a super preppy look. Make sure your socks aren’t visible and throw on some classic kicks to match. Vans, Converse, Sperry’s, Keds, and anything crafted after these brands will work best.

Classic denim shirts and jackets are also key pieces for you this season boys, so I will also remind you that if you’re wearing blue denim up top, wear some black jeans and brown cords for contrast.

Love & Chanel,

Ema

BEAUTY BY CICI

This month, the hair and makeup look is all about fun in the sun from sun-kissed lips to beachy blonde tresses. Spring Break is just a reminder that summer is right around the corner, so why wouldn’t your hair and makeup reflect just that?

MAKEUP:

1. I used Urban Decay Eye Potion in Sin (obvi!) to prep & prime the eyes and MAC’s Scene and Carbon shadows to create that blacked-out eye shadow look.

2. To get a nice winged lash line, try MAC’s liquid eyeliner in Bootblack, and paint your lashes with Maybelline Falsies Flared mascara in Very Black. If you want to be extra dramatic, top your lashes with the infamous Red Cherry false lashes in #47 (I used them on Ema for dramatic effect, but these are actually my everyday lashes!)

3. Fill and shape your eye brows with a brow pencil and try using an appropriately-colored eye shadow to blend and shade them in. Brows seem minor but they should never be overlooked! They frame your face A.K.A. your entire cosmetic palette. I used MAC’s Spiked pencil.

4. Once your eyes are glam as hell, it’s time to prep and prime your face. It’s best to apply your face primer and foundation after heavy eye makeup, just in case specks of your blackest black shadow fall. We used Laura Mercier face primer, MAC studio fix and Laura Mercier’s translucent powder to top it off. This powder is a must-have ladies!

5. To accentuate the highlights of your face and really make your makeup pop, you can use a white shimmery eye shadow in the inner corners of your eyes and NYX’s glitter cream palette just above the apples of your cheeks.

6. Blush-wise try mixing it up, literally. For this look, I mixed pink and orange Coastal Scents’ blushes together.

7. Lastly, for those stunning summer lips, line and paint your lips with your brightest red or pink lipstick, and then add some glitter. Gold shimmery eye shadow seems to work the best for this, just in the center of your lips, not all over. I used MAC’s Ruby Woo and Lickable lipsticks on this stunning ass face this month.

HAIR:

I can’t take credit for the hair this month! This girl dip-dyed her own hair with bleach at home. She’s lucky she’s cute and she pulled it off.

Style-wise, it’s basically just loose curls girls. Leaving the ends straight will add some edge, so your curls don’t look too perfect. You know we’re all about being a beautiful mess here at SS&EN.

Killer Cupcakes

For the beautifully gloomy month of February, my team of fabulous gals and I thought what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by having a good old-fashioned baking party. So we baked some cute, frosted treats for the boys, with not a sprinkle spared. And then we poisoned them. Yeah—we’re not bitter at all.

In one of my literature classes this week, my professor asked, “So who here believes in true love?” (Only in a creative writing class, I know.) Half of the class raises their hands. I didn’t think twice about my decision until the lecture moved in a totally different direction, but when I realized that I hadn’t raised my hand for love, it made me wonder when I ever stopped.

I used to think life was meant to be a fairytale, with love as the main theme. I guess I can chalk that up to one too many Disney movies and Nicholas Sparks’ books, though. Anyways, I’m really not anti-Valentine’s Day or anti-love or anti-any other idealistic romanticisms. I’ve just dated more douchebags than I can count, confused lust for love one too many times and been disappointed for days on end when a guy turns out to be more like a Tool Academy contestant than the Mr. Darcy or Chuck Bass I thought he was (the new and improved Chuck Bass who actually has a heart, of course). But no matter who you are, what your Facebook relationship status is, and whichever losers make up the mistakes that are your past love life, February 14th is inevitable.

So here are some tips to keep your Valentine’s Day sweetheart image up at very least. And if that’s not enough to get your spirits up, try baking some red velvet cupcakes and washing them down with a bottle of Stella Rosa. Always does the trick for me.

FASHION

1.   Tulle: Ah, a girl’s best friend. Tulle has the power to make any girl-next-door feel like a princess, with or without a so-called Prince. Plain tulle skirts are a great buy, because you can wear them under almost any dress than isn’t super form fitting. If you get really lucky, you can find a dress with a sheer, exterior layer of tulle like this blush pink/nude one I came across at Buffalo Exchange.

2.   Bows: Bow headbands, bow jewelry, satin bows—bows scream fucking adorable. The more dramatic the bow, the better.

3.   Lace: Okay, this one is a little tricky, because lace was huge about 5 or 6 years ago and most of those pieces are just tacky now. To do this trend justice, look for pieces that are either completely sheer lace or  ones that are layered under some tulle.

4.   Cardigans: I don’t even want to call this a trend, but I need to express how much I love cardigans. I fucking love them. Grandma ones, boyfriend ones, floral ones…you really can’t go wrong. So fill your closet up with them.

GUYS’ FASHION:

Boys, if you’re going out on the 14th it’s safe to assume that you a) Have a date b) Will be looking for a date at a Single Awareness themed party or c) Completely forgot the overrated significance of this day and are just celebrating another taco Tuesday. So if you are either a or b, here is my advice to keep your swag on point:

Dress-up! Seriously, stop being so lazy with your damn wardrobe and take it up a notch, because girls love well-dressed guys just as much as you love us in heels. Put a collared shirt on. It doesn’t have to look stuffy and business-y if that’s not your thing. Not everyone is Chuck Bass. Clearly. But even a plaid button up with a skinny tie will score you some points. If you want to take your tie game to the next level, buy a bow tie. Now a bow tie can go wrong (if it clashes horribly with your shirt color or if it goes in the Pee Wee Herman direction, for example), but the fact that you’re rocking a bow tie at all is the cutest thing ever, I promise. If you’re still self-conscious about the shirt & tie deal, throw on a beanie or some Chucks to contrast the dressy-ness.

Love & Chanel,

Ema.

P.S. For the record, we here at #Trend Diary do not recommend poisoning your loser ex-boyfriend, cheap date or even just that guy in class you still can’t get to look at you twice. Your byronic hero is out there somewhere, just as hopelessly romantic and anti-all things red & pink as you are today. Everything happens for a reason, so eat cake and move on.

BEAUTY BY CICI

My Rihanna-redheaded Cici is actually celebrating her birthday in Vegas right now, so I told her not to worry about the hair and make-up write up. Obviously. So, I’m sorry that I can’t give you guys an in-depth how-to this month, but I can tell you what I do know and show you some products that Cici and I both die for.

HAIR:

1.   As always, tease your hair like you’re in an 80’s hair metal band. Use Big Sexy Hair’s Backcomb in a Bottle for the best results. 2. Pull all of your hair over to one side, leaving your bangs out. 3. Braid your hair in a fish-tail until there is just an inch left of your ends, and tie the braid in place. 4. Carefully place your favorite headband on. Try not to touch the teased hair. 5. Your look can be finished here or if you want the messier style we went for, gently tug at the braid with both hands from top to bottom, slightly deconstructing it.

MAKEUP:

Okay I really can’t explain this part, but Cici definitely wanted to go more bold and colorful than we usually do and I loved it. If you can’t go all out for Hallmark holidays, then what are they good for anyways? Here’s what she used.

1.   Urban Decay’s Naked palette (the first one that was released).

2.   Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

3.   MAC’s limited edition Heatherette Eyeshadow Trio

4.   MAC lipstick in Hang Up

5.   MAC Studio Fix foundation powder

6.   Revlon lipstick in Fuchsia Fusion

7.   Too Faced Lashgasm black mascara

8.   Big Sexy Hair’s What A Tease spray

9.   Aveda Control Force hairspray

Pretty Damn Reckless

This month, we found love in a hopeless place. And lust. And high heels. And lots and lots of lipstick.

During winter break, I had a bit of a creative epiphany. Or maybe it was more of a social epiphany. I’m not exactly sure, but I do know that recklessness and friends and music and fashion are all essential. Honestly, I’m obsessed with each and every one of those things and I have a feeling I’m not alone. Therefore, I’ve decided to take this printed blog in a whole new direction. And that direction is wherever the party is at. So from now on, my team and I will be throwing a themed soiree for every editorial. Yes there will be intoxicating substances and scenes of young lust, but equally important, there will be fierce fashion, hair, make-up, and other sparkly things.

I’ve realized that I can’t really tell the difference between love and lust anymore. Or between having a good time and getting into trouble. That’s kind of the beauty of being young these days, though. Maybe it’s always been the beauty of it. The more failed relationships and hook-ups I have, the more I have to write songs about.

I think I’m addicted to the idea of a heart breaking, whether it’s his or my very own. I’m obsessed with everything that’s not good for me. It’s kind of sick, I know, but think of it as a new age 60s-esque revolution—when the question isn’t why anymore, but why not? To quote a seriously over-played Drake song, “you only live once.” So this year, instead of making pristine resolutions you will never keep, why don’t you try to be happy? Keep on playing your favorite played-out top 40 rap-gone-house songs and making those bad decisions in and out of Vegas while you still can. I know the flower-studded hippies had it pretty good, but I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to just be young and dumb. So live it up, kids.
Cheers.
P.S. Drink responsibly. Or something nice like that.
The FASHION:
1. Tiffany’s blue or any hue of turquoise. Buy any accessories you see in this color, especially shoes and bags. It’s obviously pretty bright, so I wouldn’t recommend making it your new black, but suede heels or denim shorts in this color will add just enough of a pop to your overall look.
2. Leopard. Yes, again. I know leopard-print was part of December’s Schoolhouse Rockabilly piece, but it is definitely worth repeating. So wear it.
3. Faux fur. I don’t care if I have an official Spring Break countdown on my iPhone, it’s still cold out right now. Well, California-cold at least. So why not use any chance you get to rock some faux fur? I really don’t wanna see anyone walking to class in this kind of coat, but anywhere else is pretty much a green light. If Carrie Bradshaw can wear fur with pajama bottoms in the streets of New York on New Years Eve, then why can’t we sport ours to the grocery store? Or a house party, at least. Wear it with denim for a rebel-casual look.
4. DIY. Do it your damn self. Have fun with fashion, because that’s what it’s there for. There’s never been an easier time to make or edit clothes yourself because distressed is in, which means you don’t need to break out that dusty sewing machine. T-shirts, denim and tights are the easiest to work with. You can rip them, bleach them, cut holes in them, and stud them for days. If you’re worried about fucking up some of your favorite pieces, hop on YouTube for a million and one DIY tutorials.
5. Tights & Knee-highs. Another trend you need to take advantage of now, before the sun burns the clouds away. Tights are a cheap and easy accessory that can completely change your look. Try ripped, lace, or fish-net tights for a hopelessly glam feel.
Guys’ FASHION:
Think Rihanna’s Chris Brown-looking counterpart in the “We Found Love” video meets James Dean. Cardigans are always irresistible on guys, especially ones with old school stripes. You NEED to own at least one pair of black fitted jeans, because they look good with almost anything. Lastly, if you can rock them, you should definitely wear boots. They’ll give you just enough of a bad boy edge, so your cardigan or letterman’s jacket doesn’t overpower your look.

Love & Alcohol,
Ema.

Beauty By Cici
Ema’s look was inspired by Rihanna’s video for “We Found Love” and the punk rock princess herself, Taylor Momson. I figured blacked-out eyes, wild lips, and “the higher the hair the closer you are to heaven” look seemed very much appropriate for this months rebel-like, drunk love, party ‘til you black the fuck out photoshoot.

The MAKE-UP:
To achieve this look: 1. Prep and prime the face with your favorite moisturizer and face primer. This month, I’m loving MAC’s Prep + Prime Face Primer. 2. Prime the lids using Urban Decay’s Eye Potion. Because it’s the best. 3. Next, take the color Virgin from Urban Decays’s infamous Naked Palette and apply it all around the lid up to the brow bone. This will be your base color. 4. Take MAC’s satin eyeshadow in Scene, and brush it just slightly pass the lid, focusing on making the outer corners of the eyes the darkest for depth. Smoothly blend the color in at the inner corners of the eyes. Blend..blend..blend.  5. Take a black shadow (I used one from Coastal Scents Smokey Palette) and start from the outer corners towards the center. Since this is such a dramatic look, blending is all you can do at this point to slightly bring the black down to the water line. 6. I used Almay’s Liquid liner in Noir to achieve a nice cat-eye. 7. Line your waterlines with your favorite black eye liner. 6. Paint your lashes with your blackest black mascara. I used Makeup Forever’s Smokey Lash in black which is a MUST HAVE! 8. Apply false lashes for a more dramatic look.

8. The brighter your cheeks and the more defined your cheekbones, the better. Try MAC’s Love Thing. 9. Last, but absolutely not least, is the lipstick. In this shoot, we used MAC’s Ruby Woo, Lickable, & Hang-up. Remember, lipstick is an accessory. Wear it bold to wear it well.

The HAIR:
1. Curl the hair with a 1-inch barrel all around. 2. Brush the hair out with a soft-bristle brush, so the curls loosen. 3. Spray the hair with a medium hold hairspray. 4. With a teasing brush and Big Sexy Hair’s Back-Comb in a Bottle (another absolute must—it’s like glue for your tresses), tease the hair. Tease the hair like there is no tomorrow.  Tease at the root and tease at the ends to create a messy rocker look. Remember the Higher the hair..the closer you are to going HAM in heaven..Amen.

Schoolhouse Rockabilly

This month my team and I wanted to mix pretty with rebel, which is an extremely popular styling combination lately and I’m pretty obsessed with it myself. If you’re going to wear a leather jacket and military boots, you need to soften up the look with something pretty, like a lace top and some oh-so-cheeky accessories. Likewise, if you have your heart set on wearing your best floral Granny cardigan, try paring it up with some distressed skinny jeans or a mini skirt with tights. Don’t get me wrong, the badass look and the preppy look by themselves are classic, but when you throw them together—something beautiful happens.

FASHION:
1. Polka dots. Yes, this simple yet bold print has yet again made a comeback. Polka dot tops, sweaters, skirts and dresses are retro-sophisticated and just plain adorable. *Please note that I left out polka dot pants. So do us all a favor, and don’t.
2. Leopard print. I don’t personally believe that this trend ever has or ever will go away, but then again this is coming from a girl who’s first tattoo was a leopard print heart. Leopard is classic and this season it’s in full effect. And yes, you may definitely rock some leopard print skinnies.
3. Collars. At first I was only a fan of sheer blouses with collars, but now I’ve come to love just about anything with a collar. Collared shirts are super cute alone or under a printed cardigan. If the cardigan is a solid color or argyle pattern, however, you may look a bit stuffy, so by “printed cardigan” I mean polka dots. Or leopard print. Or any print that isn’t argyle.
4. Wedges. Thank God for wedges. Seriously, thank him. Or whomever you thank for the best things ever invented. Not only are wedges and chunky heels hotter than Ryan Gosling right now, but they’re typically much more comfortable than platform stilettos (which still have my heart). And for you gals who just cannot walk in heels but love the look, this is a perfect alternative. *Side-note to these girls: I will actually grant you polka dot pants and argyle sweaters, if you would just learn how to walk in heels. And I’m pretty sure the rest of our fabulous & dying society agrees with me.

HAIR:
To achieve this pin-up hair that screams Rockabilly, follow Cici’s steps:
1. Start by curling your entire head with a 1” curling iron barrel.
2. Brush out the curls to loosen them, then spray with a firm hold hairspray (Aveda Control Force used here).
3. [For Look 1] Pull the hair back into a ponytail and pin random strands of hair into curls against the crown, ending up with a mass of curls high atop the back of your head. (This doesn’t have to be perfect; the messier and bigger, the better.)
4. Grab your favorite colored bandana and tie it in a bow just behind the hairline. The bow can be worn at the center or off to the side.
[For Look 2] Take down the pinned curls and tease the hair at the crown of your head. Smooth out the top layer and pin hair in its voluminous place to create a pompadour. Make sure you cannot see the teased hair underneath.
*Straight-across bangs are not necessary, but they do add a lot to this look. And if you are going to cut your bangs, the thicker the better.

MAKEUP:
To get this subtle and sweet retro rockabilly look:
1. Prep your face with moisturizer and primer. Always.
2. Apply liquid foundation (Mac Matchmaker Liquid Foundation used here) and then set it with a translucent powder (try Laura Mercier’s) to soften and even out the tone of your face. This will also help it last throughout the day.
3. For the deep, rosy look on your cheeks, try Mac’s Love Thing blush. Then highlight your cheek bones and your T-zone with a white eye shadow to give off that dreamy look whenever light hits that pretty face.
4. Now for the key element: the eyes. Prep your eyelids with Urban Decay’s Eye Potion Primer.
5. Put a shimmery vanilla eye shadow all over the lids, up to your brows and then overlap it with a blush pink matte shadow from the lids to the crease.
6. Brush a deep mauve shadow from the outer lid to the center of the lid, then overlay it with a dark brown. (Be sure to blend out any harsh lines with a clean blending brush.)
7. Use a liquid liner to achieve a sexy cat-eye look (Almay’s Liquid Eyeliner in Noir used here). Make the cat-eye corner long and thick for extra drama.
8. Apply your favorite blackest black mascara and some false lashes to make your eyes stand out even more.
9. Lastly, line your lips with a deep red lip liner, fill them in with a matching lip color, and you’ll be ready to ditch class and wait for trouble to come find you.

Sheer Havoc

The Old Cemetery
On that warm night, we went to the old cemetery.
The forgotten one, on Orange and Willow Street.
And the dead didn’t seem to mind the company.
We felt no fear, just peace, in the ghostly reverie.
On the steps of the mausoleum, we rested our feet.
On that warm night, when we went to the old cemetery
Sitting close together–it’s imprinted in my memory:
You inhaled, blew smoke rings and we watched them retreat.
And the dead didn’t seem to mind the company
We laughed and talked, the night made our voices carry.
Enveloped in yours, my hands looked so petite,
On that warm night, when we went to the old cemetery.
We walked among the graves quietly, respectfully.
We stepped in the wet grass, carefully placing our feet.
And the dead didn’t seem to mind the company.
We wondered how we would die, quickly or slowly
As we read the inscriptions; so bittersweet
On that warm night, we went to the old cemetery
And the dead didn’t seem to mind the company.
[Poem by the rad &fashion-forward: Kristen Desmond http://kristendez.tumblr.com/]

With Hallow’s Eve just around the corner and vampiric media trending on every social site (not to mention the oh so greatly-anticipated “Breaking Dawn” premiering next month), my team and I found it beyond fitting to have a Pin-Up Vampire-themed photo shoot to kick off our new project: #Trend Diary. This monthly fashion editorial will feature clothing trends along with what’s hot in hair an makeup. Take it as inspiration, not a hard and fast rule book, because personal style is not something that can be duplicated, and in the words of my personal fashion god, “Fashion fades—only style remains the same” (-Coco Chanel).

FASHION:
1. Sheer. Sheer dresses, sheer collared shirts (my current obsession), sheer maxi skirts, printed pattern-sheer, sheer lace, etc. Sheer is the new black.

2. Dresses. Girls, we’ve come a long way (not to say we don’t still have a long way to go) but we definitely can wear the pants these days, so let’s get back to femme. And I do love fitted mini-dresses as much as the next girl, but this season it’s all about the longer, more flowy silhouette, so try on a maxi or knee-length dress this upcoming holiday season.

3. Boots. Yes I understand that military boots go against the emphasis I just put on femme looks, but…well, style is all about doing whatever the fuck you want with your clothes, so why not pair up your best Sunday dress with some Doc Martens?
P.S. For October’s boy fashion tips: if you own a hooded pleather jacket (spare the cute little cows) and any degree of Converse shoes (cool points for John Varvatos), you’ll be just fine.

HAIR:
To achieve the classic finger wave style on long hair simply follow Cici’s steps below:
1. Part the hair either far left or far right.
2. Starting at the nape take ½” to 1” sections and curl in one direction (easiest to do with a curling wand).
3. Continue to curl the entire head in the same direction. (Be sure to use a strong hold hairspray *Aveda Control Force)
4. With a bristle brush, brush out the entire head to loosen up the curls.
5. With a styling comb, mold the hair in the direction of each curl—it should all look very uniform . Over-exaggerating the mold at the top of the hair (in the bangs) will achieve a nice finger wave look.

MAKEUP:
To look vampiric (most likely for a costume, but what you guys do with this how-to is your own business..), follow these steps:
1. Use a tinted moisturizer that is 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone to achieve a pale ghostly look.
2. Set the tinted moisturizer with a light foundation powder to over exaggerate the pale skin tone appearance.
3. Get a dark brown and a  mauve/purple eyeshadow to contour your face. Contour the hollows of your cheek, bridge of your nose, and jaw line to really make those features pop.
4. Shadow the under-eye area and deepen the shadow around the inner tear ducts of your eyes. This effect will give you a more corpse-like appearance.
5. Apply Liquid liner, Mascara, and False Lashes.
6. Lastly, put on your favorite red or dark plum lipstick for contrast, and you’ll be ready to steal Edward away from that hopelessly annoying Bella chick.
